Tom Needham
Tom Needham’s career is defined by an unwavering commitment to students, faculty, families, and fellow educators, particularly those within neurodiverse communities. With a deep dedication to supporting individuals with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other learning differences, Tom has worked tirelessly to create more inclusive, enriching, and practical educational experiences. His leadership has helped shape programs that emphasize social-emotional growth, employability, and self-advocacy—ensuring that differently-abled learners are not only prepared for college but also for lifelong success.
Beyond his school community, Tom has extended his impact by mentoring leaders of small schools, fostering meaningful collaborations, and driving systemic change. His visionary sabbatical research on employment and independence for neurodiverse individuals led to groundbreaking initiatives in job coaching, college support, and independent living. These efforts have influenced not only Hill Top but also organizations such as the Neurodiversity Employment Network, Neurodiversity in the Workplace, and the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, paving the way for scalable programs that expand opportunities for neurodivergent individuals in education and the workforce.
Tom’s influence is further reflected in his service on the ADVIS Board of Directors, where his commitment to educational equity led him to forge a strong partnership with the Community Partnership School (CPS). He actively supported CPS as a tutor, board member, and collaborator, strengthening programs that bridge communities and expand opportunities for underserved students. He also played a pivotal role in founding the Neurodiversity Employment Network, an organization dedicated to fostering workplace success for neurodivergent individuals.
A leader, mentor, and advocate, Tom has spent nearly five decades shaping independent school education with expertise, compassion, and an unyielding belief in the potential of every student. His legacy is one of innovation, inclusion, and an enduring impact on the lives of thousands of educators, parents, and—most importantly—students.
